IAIA Mission visited SE “USIE IZOTOP”

On November 6, 2024, a working meeting with a team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place at SE “USIE IZOTOP.” This important visit was part of the second phase of the IAEA “Support and Assistance Mission on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources in Ukraine” (ISAMRAD), aimed at providing support and ensuring the safety and security of ionizing radioactive sources (IRS) in Ukraine.

As part of the Mission, which was accompanied by specialists from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), a technical visit to the facilities of the enterprise’s production complex, including the radioisotope product storage facility, was carried out. The participants were familiarized with the main areas of activity of SE “USIE IZOTOP”. The IAEA representatives were shown the practical application of equipment and systems already received as part of the international IAEA RANET network to enhance the radiation safety and physical protection system of SE “USIE IZOTOP” facilities.

The meeting covered a wide range of topics. The experts exchanged views on the preliminary results of the Mission’s tasks and conducted a detailed assessment of the progress achieved in improving the quality of safety and security of IRS at the SE “USIE IZOTOP”.

Based on the discussions held, further plans for cooperation were outlined, and additional needs were agreed upon to strengthen the capabilities of SE “USIE IZOTOP” to meet the highest safety standards.

On the last day of October, SE “USIE IZOTOP” hosted a delegation from the Kyiv Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by its President, Honored Economist of Ukraine, Mykola Zasulskyi. The visit was marked by warm, friendly discussions between the enterprise’s leadership and Chamber representatives.

The meeting addressed the relevant aspects of cooperation between SE “USIE IZOTOP” and the Kyiv Chamber of Commerce, resulting in an agreement for the Chamber to assist in identifying foreign partners and conducting a quality system audit for the enterprise.

Volodymyr Kalachyk, Director of SE “USIE IZOTOP,” presented plans for the production of radiopharmaceuticals in Ukraine, introducing the Nuclear Medicine Development Concept, which has received endorsement from the Subcommittee on Oncology Prevention and Control of the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on Public Health, Medical Assistance and Medical Insurance.

Mykola Zasulskyi highlighted that SE “USIE IZOTOP” is a unique strategic enterprise for Ukraine that continues to advance proactively and ambitiously despite the challenging environment.

SE “USIE IZOTOP” personnel continues to participate in trainings and improve their skills
As part of the international technical assistance project supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, technical specialists of SE “USIE IZOTOP” took part in the training on maintenance and repair of A100 manipulators, which took place from 21 to 25 October 2024 at Walischmiller manufacturing factory (HWM) in Markdorf, Germany.

Manipulators of this type are used in the hot cell of the SE “USIE IZOTOP” production complex for the safe radioactive material management, including repackaging, verification and identification of ionizing radiation sources.
The training included theoretical and practical courses on the key aspects of maintenance, diagnostics, replacement of spare parts and repair of manipulator elements and systems.

Completion of this specialized training course directly at the manufacturer site will help the company’s personnel to expertly maintain manipulators, identify and eliminate potential problems in time, and thus avoid long-term repairs.

SE “USIE IZOTOP” continues to pay great attention to the professional development of its employees, as the high qualification and competence of personnel is the key to safe and high-quality work.

During a business trip focused on advancing nuclear medicine and radioimmunoassay (RIA) diagnostics, representatives of SE “USIE IZOTOP” held a meeting with the leadership of the Czech branch of the international company BECKMAN COULTER and its subsidiary, IMMUNOTECH, which specializes in producing RIA diagnostic kits for oncology and many other diseases. The delegation also toured the company’s extensive production facilities. The visit resulted in agreements to strengthen the cooperation efforts.

Radioimmunoassay (RIA) diagnostics stands as one of the most accurate in-vitro laboratory methods, requiring no physical intervention, thus guaranteeing precise results. The RIA diagnostics is distinguished by its high precision, sensitivity, and specificity – significant advantages that underscore its value.

Interesting fact: IMMUNOTECH’s largest customer for the RIA diagnostic kits is South Korea – a country globally recognized for its high standards in healthcare and impressive cancer recovery rates.

It is worth pointing out that SE “USIE IZOTOP” is actively working to ensure that Ukraine benefits from the advanced radiopharmaceuticals, enhancing cancer diagnostics and treatment.

SE “USIE IZOTOP” team participated in the 37th Annual Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) that was held in Hamburg from 19 to 23 October

Over 7,000 participants from across the Europe and many other countries worldwide gathered to exchange expertise and discuss opportunities and prospects for using radioactive isotopes in medicine.

The Congress futured an industrial exhibition where more than 150 companies showcased their products and innovations in the production of radiopharmaceuticals, medical equipment, systems for isotope production and radiation safety.

Meetings were held with long-standing partners, and new connections were established to expand the potential for nuclear medicine in Ukraine.

Engagements with colleagues from other countries who have successfully developed industrial cyclotrons centers offered the invaluable practical insights that will fuel the company’s ambitious plans, enabling us to apply experience of leading nations to benefit our country.

SE “USIE IZOTOP” at the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga with representatives of Ukrainian business circles.

Director of SE “USIE IZOTOP” Volodymyr KALACHYK took part in the meeting of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii SYBIHA with representatives of the Ukrainian business circles, businesses, exporters, chambers of commerce, business associations, state enterprises and corporations, which took place on October 3 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian entrepreneurs for their resilience in the face of the full-scale russian aggression. He noted that supporting the economy of Ukraine is extremely important for ensuring the defense capability of our country.

The Minister made special emphasis on plans for the development of cooperation with the Ukrainian business in terms of public and cultural diplomacy, and also noted that the dialogue between diplomats and business would be regular.

As part of the meeting, special attention was paid to the initiative “Made in Ukraine” and the international platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine “Nazovni”, which is designed to provide diplomatic assistance to the Ukrainian businesses in entering foreign markets.
