The 38th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster
Today is International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster. We remember the heroes and victims of the most terrible man-made accident that happened on the territory of Ukraine in 1986 and shook the whole world.
Employees of SE “USIE IZOTOP”, in particular, the then head of the company Oleksandr Solod, participated in the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant: they fought the fire and cleared radiation debris.
Our Enterprise was also involved in overcoming the consequences of the disaster: on a large scale, it supplied various equipment and personal protective equipment for liquidators, organized checkpoints and decontamination points. A service point for the repair of dosimetric equipment and transport for all enterprises of the liquidation zone has been equipped at the premises of SE “USIE IZOTOP”.
On May 20, 1986, the specialized Construction Department No. 605, known as US-605 (УС-605), was formed for the purpose of erecting a structure for the long-term burial of the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The employees of our company joined the staff unit US-605, which received all specialists seconded to the Chernobyl NPP.
We cannot turn back time to “undo” the disaster. However, we cannot do it again. And to be grateful to those who saved the world back then. However, it is in our power not to repeat this. And to be grateful to those who saved the world then.
This is one of the most famous photos of photojournalist Ihor Kostin, who 14 hours after the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant boarded a helicopter to fly around the epicenter of the disaster. His photo series entitled “The Tragedy of Chernobyl” was awarded the World Press Photo Award in 1987.
